One of the great blessings of this parish is that people bring me ideas. A new ministry, a special celebration, a speaker we should invite, a gathering we should host. Every one of these proposals is a gift, and behind every gift is something even more valuable: a parishioner who loves this parish enough to imagine more for it. 
So let me say clearly at the outset: this reflection is not about saying no. It is about how we say yes well.
 
An idea and a commitment are two different things. An idea costs nothing and can be enjoyed by everyone. A commitment costs money, time, volunteer energy, and pastoral attention — and when a parish commits to something it cannot sustain, the idea does not simply fade away. It leaves behind exhausted volunteers, disappointed guests, and a quiet reluctance to try again. The saddest fate of a good idea is not rejection. It is a hasty yes followed by a slow collapse.
 
Our Lord Himself counsels this kind of deliberation: "Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion?" (Luke 14:28). Counting the cost is not a lack of faith. It is what faith looks like when it intends to finish what it starts.
 
So when a proposal comes forward at St. Benedict the Moor, we will discern it together through seven questions:

1. Why this? What pastoral need or opportunity does it address? A speaker, a choir, or an event is an instrument, not a purpose.
 
2. Why us? How does it advance the particular mission of this parish — evangelization through inculturation — rather than simply being a good thing for a parish somewhere?
 
3. Why now? Is this the right moment, given everything else we are carrying?
 
4. Who benefits, and who participates? Are our parishioners being formed as agents of the work, or merely gathered as an audience for it?
 
5. Who decides, and who is responsible? Enthusiasm shared by everyone and owned by no one is how good ideas quietly fail.
 
6. What will it cost? Not only in money, but in time, attention, and the other good things we will set aside to do this one.
 
7. What will remain? Six months afterward, what will be different in the life of this parish? A memorable event is not necessarily a fruitful one. Memory concerns what people recall; fruit concerns what people become.
 
A proposal that cannot yet answer these questions is not a bad idea. It is simply not yet ready — and "not yet" is an invitation, not a refusal. If you bring me an idea and I hand you these questions, I am not sending you away. I am asking you to help me build the version of your idea that will still be bearing fruit two years from now.
 
That is what it means to take an idea seriously. And it is what your ideas deserve.
